As shown at right, they can also serve to separate a large room into inviting areas for different activities, to provide  additional wall space for furniture placement, or to shorten the apparent length of a long, narrow room. The planters can be simple plywood boxes,  lined with sheet metal or plastic trays and finished to blend with the style of the room.

Plant boxes  set on casters can be arranged in a variety of ways to divide a long room or create an entrance hall where non exists. For an airy effect, upright bird’snest ferns are used in the planters and delicate, arching brake ferns in the hanging containers above.

In a room short of wall space,  a central island garden provides a background for furnishing. Directly above it is a ceilingmounted lighting box, fitted with a bank of fluorescent tubes to light the dieflenbachias and philodendrons below it.

interior plantA long, narrow room can be made to look shorter by a low floor planter built across one end.  The one shown here is filled with a bold display of tall monsteras and medium-size di eflen bachias flanked by shorter caladiums.

interior plantIn a oddlyshaped room, a wedge of space behind the couch is filled by (from left)  a butterfly palm, Swedish ivy,  coleus a saddle-leaved philodendron, a  Dracaena hookerians, a red-margined dracaena and a  dieflenbachia. On the floor is another saddle leaved philodendrons.

Starting plants from stem cuttings

plant from stem
1. A simple way to start new plants such as Pearl Edge euonimus is to plant pieces of stem in a self-contained environment improvised from a clear plastic 1-gallon food storage bag. Use a roating medium of two parts peat moss and  1 part sharp sand;moisten this mix and put into the bag to make a base 4 inches deep.
2. Take 3-to 6-inch-long cuttings from the ends of young, ligtht green stems,   slicing just below a leaf joint with
pruning shears or  a knife. Strip off                                                                   the  lower leaves

3. Insert the ends of the cuttings 1 to 3 inches deep in the rooting mixture. The ends may be dipped in hormone powder beforehand to stimulate root formation. To prevent rot, space the cuttings so the leaves do ot touch. Firm the rooting mix  around the stems to keep them upright.

4. Using a spray bulb or atomizer, mist just enough water over the leaves to wet them. Then pull the edges of the  plastic together at the top and blow into the opening to inflate the bag before sealing it with a plastic wire twist.

5. Keep  the cutting in bright  light out of full sun. Inside the bag, water vapor from the leaves will collect on the plastic and run down to keep the rooting mix moist. It many large drops form, open the bag for a few hours to let the excess water evaporate.
 6. when the roots are an inch long, open the bag and gradually rool down the sides (top) over a period of about a week to let the  cuttings adjust to room conditions before potting them (bottom).
To see when roots are big enough, lift acutting with a spoon.
